At Bassett Dental Practice, we can use intravenous (IV) sedation to help you to feel more relaxed and comfortable about your treatment. There are a number of reasons why sedation may be appropriate:
IV sedation involves the injection of a sedative through a vein in your arm or hand before your treatment, making you feel drowsy but remaining conscious throughout.
Sedated patients do not remember anything about their dental treatment, even though they do not fall asleep. Sedation is safe when administered by a trained clinician and we constantly monitor your vital signs.
Your dentist will still give you a local anaesthetic to numb the area around the tooth to be treated as sedatives are not painkillers.
You must be accompanied by a responsible adult if you are sedated. After your treatment, they must take you home and stay with you until the effects have completely worn off. This may take up to 24 hours. You should not drive or operate machinery, smoke or consume alcohol during this time.
Your dentist will advise you on sedation during your consultation appointment. Medical conditions requiring prescription drugs may not be compatible with sedation.
